Alamance Community College (ACC) has opened a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit about American voting that is open to the public now through October 17.
“Voices and Votes: Democracy in America,” a full-standing, multi-panel exhibit, is on display in the Student Activities Center on the second floor of the main campus building behind the college bookstore.
Made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Council on the Humanities, “Voice and Votes” is based on a major “Museum on Main Street” exhibition currently on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.
The ACC exhibit traces the history and significance of American voting and elections with historical and contemporary photos; educational and archival video; engaging multimedia interactives with short games and additional footage, photos, and information; and historical objects like campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia, and protest material.
The exhibition elements include an audio box, televisions, touchscreen monitors, flipbooks, approximately 14 object cases, and mechanical interactives.
At least 1,000 students from the Alamance-Burlington Schools are expected to tour the exhibit this fall, according to Sherri Singer, an instructor who facilitated the exhibit’s arrival on the college campus.
