EMERGENCY MEDICAL SCIENCE

Alamance Community College offers quality training programs such as initial provider certification courses, BLS and ALS continuing education, and specialty courses for the experienced provider and, or the inexperienced community member.
ACC is credentialed by the N.C. Office of EMS as an advanced education institution, with approval to conduct initial and continuing education training for Emergency Responder, EMT, Advanced EMT, Paramedic, and is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
Our program strives to develop students who are clinically competent, able to consistently demonstrate effective communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills; all the while regularly exhibiting professional development and growth consistent with the program’s mission and expected outcomes.
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
The Emergency Medical Responder course prepares the EMR student to provide prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Areas of study include an introduction to emergency medical services systems, roles and responsibilities of EMRs, anatomy and physiology, medical emergencies, trauma, and special considerations for working in the prehospital setting. The class consists of a combination of lecture, web-enhanced supplements, skills demonstration and practice, and simulated patient experiences.
- The student must be at least 17 years of age on or before the official end date of the course.
- Possession of a high school diploma, high school equivalency, or successful completion of an exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum at the tenth-grade level.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
This course introduces basic emergency medical care. Topics include preparatory, airway, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma, infants and children, and operations. The students will demonstrate knowledge of didactic and lab skills in the clinical and simulation setting.
- Possession of a high school diploma, high school equivalency or successful completion of an exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum at the eleventh-grade level.
- The student must be 17 years of age on or before the official end of the course.
- Successful completion of EMS-3200 BLS Introduction
Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) course will build on the knowledge that was received in the Emergency Medical Technical (EMT) course. Apply advanced knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and/or medical transportation. Students will complete field internship and clinicals in multiple settings.
- Successful completion of EMS-3200 (Introduction for ALS Providers) from Alamance Community College.
- Students must be certified at a minimum level of EMT prior to participation in the clinical
- education phase of the course. Students who fail to obtain their EMT (NC/NREMT) certification by the scheduled clinical orientation will be dropped from the program.
- Students must have a high school diploma or high school equivalency.
- Successful completion of college-level English, or within the previous 12 months complete a
written assessment placing the individual into college-level English. Placement by RISE without the use of a written assessment will not meet this requirement.
- Successful completion of college-level Math, or within the previous 12 months complete a written assessment placing the individual into college-level Math. Placement by RISE without the use of a written assessment will not meet this requirement.
EMT Refresher
This course is intended for providers who have allowed their credentials to lapse, and/or are deficient in their annual continuing education hours.
- Currently holds a valid North Carolina EMT , NREMT, or other State EMS Credential
- Held an NC EMT Credential that has expired and qualifies for the reinstatement of a lapsed credential
Paramedic Refresher
This course is intended for providers who have allowed their credentials to lapse, and/or are deficient in their annual continuing education hours.
- Currently holds a valid North Carolina Paramedic, NREMT Paramedic , or other State Paramedic Credential
Held an NC Paramedic Credential that has expired and qualifies for the reinstatement of a lapsed credenti
